History of Institute of Cardiology
M.D. STRAZHESKO INSTITUTE OF CARDIOLOGY, MAS OF UKRAINE
Development of the Ukrainian therapeutic school, including its cardiological branch, and also the needs of practical healthcare, had required establishment in Ukraine of a specialized scientific clinical center. Such clinical center, named the Ukrainian Research Institute of Clinical Medicine, was founded in Kyiv in March 1936. Academician M.D. Strazhesko, initiator of the Institute and whose name bears the present-day Ukrainian Research Institute of Cardiology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, became the first director of the Institute. Foundation of the Institute was a logical and important step in the development of Ukrainian and, in particular, Kyiv therapeutic school.
The activity of the Institute was interrupted by the Great Patriotic War (1941 – 1945). After the liberation of Kyiv from the fascist occupants the scientific center renewed its activity and started to solve the problems of rheumatic and hypertensive diseases, circulatory failure, neuroendocrine diseases, pathology of pregnancy under internal diseases, clinical pharmacology, hematology and surgical pathology.
During a postwar period a lot of distinguished Ukrainian medical scientists worked at the Institute under the direction of M.D. Strazhesko, among them: Academician A.I. Smirnova-Zamkova, Professors A.A. Aizenberg, I.N. Ischenko, A.L. Miknev, Ya. I. Pivovonsky, F. Ya. Primak, D.P. Chebotaryov, S.N. Sharavsky, D.N. Yanovsky, Honorary Doctor of Ukraine A.L. Phakadze, V.A> Hatuncev and many others.
Outstanding scientists, professors N.A. Gvatua, P.A. Frolkis, O.G. Kaminsky and S.M. Vovchenko had been working at the Institute at different time periods. Outstanding scientists, professors M.K. Furkalo, I.K. Sledzevska, Yu.V. Yanovsky continue to work at the Institute.
Widely known in Ukraine and elsewhere, scientists who originated from the Institute and are currently working at other R&D institutions: prof. A.V. Tokar, prof. A.I. Khomaziuk, MAS academician L.A. Pyrig, prof. I.M. Gandzha.
After the death of M.D. Strazhesko in 1952 the direction of the Institute was taken over by his close colleague professor A.L. Mihnev. Later on the Institute was subsequently headed by professor A.I. Gricyuk (1970-1974), professor N.K. Furkalo (1974-1989), professor V.O. Bobrov (1989-1998). Professor V.M. Kovalenko has been the director of the Institute since 1998 till present.
In 1952 the Institute was named after its founder and in 1978 a monument to academician M.D. Strazhesko was inaugurated at the new location of the Institute.
During Strazhesko's life time at the Institute there has formed clinical therapeutic school which determined the main trends in the development of medical science in Ukraine.
With the development of cardiology and with significant increase in cardiovascular morbidity in Ukraine the Institute gradually specialized in cardiology and in 1977 it was reorganized into the Ukrainian Research Institute of Cardiology.
In 1999 the Institute was transferred from the Health Ministry to Medical Academy and was renamed into Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.
Nowadays Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology is a leading Ukrainian scientific center in the field of cardiology, and the Institute focuses its activity on the most pressing problems in this area of medical science.
In 1980 the scientists of the Institute (professors N.A. Gvatua, M.K.Furkalo, J.K.SIedzevskaya) were awarded with the State Prize of Ukraine for the development and introduction into medical practice of the phased treatment methods of patients with myocardial infarction.
During the last decade the themes of scientific research at the Institute corresponded to the situation in the area of cardiology in Ukraine. The scientists of the Institute aim at solving the important problems of pathogenic mechanisms of the development of coronary disease, arterial hypertension and many others of the most widespread diseases of cardiovascular system. A number of new methods of diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis have been developed at the Institute while the activity is focuseid at the development of the optimal methods to control such life-threatening diseases or their complications as stenocardia, myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, hypertensive crisis in patients with hypertensive disease or symptomatic hypertensions, cardiac arrhythmias, and heart failure.
In recent years the scientists of the Institute successfully solve the problems of endovascular cardiology, and thrombolysis. The Institute was the first medical institution in Ukraine where the methods of balloon angioplasty and urgent coronary stenting in patients with stable stenocardia and acute myocardial infarction were performed. The experimental studies are carried out according to the high-priority targets defined within the framework of the complex State scientific development programmes, e.g., the Program on Human Health. The Institute in one of the Ukrainian public health institutions responsible for the fulfillment of the World Health Organization program for prophylaxis of the main noncommunicable diseases.
Elaborated at the Institute the national program for prophylaxis of hypertension in Ukraine was approved by the Decree of the President of Ukraine (No. 117/99). The aim of the Program is to reduce in Ukraine morbidity from arterial hypertension, cerebrovascular diseases, to reduce mortality caused by complications of cardiovascular diseases, to increase life expectancy and to improve quality of life of patients.
The program is scheduled for the period 1999-2010. The institutions of 10 different ministries, governmental bodies and other agencies of executive power take part in the program as well.
It is expected tha 10-12 years of purposeful efforts will help to decrease mortality from cerebral stroke by 20-30% and from chronic coronary disease- by 10%.
A group of scientists of the institute (V.M. Kovalenko, Ye.P. Svischenko, Yu.M. Sirenko, I.P. Smirnova) was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in science and technics in 2003 for the program development and practical implementation.
The structure of the Institute has been modernized. During the last decade several new departments were founded, including the departments of clinical rheumatology and myocardial diseases, of clinical pharmacology, of medical and social problems in cardiology, of cardiac anomalies, of symptomatic hypertensions. Besides, several new laboratories were organized these are laboratories of functional diagnostics, for monitoring health status indicators, of clinical hemostasiology, of magnetocardiography, of chromatography, of extracorporeal methods of treatment (ultraviolet and laser blood irradiation, plasmapheresis, hemodialisis).
More than 730 people work at the Institute. Among 132 researchers of the Institute there are 32 scientists who have doctoral degrees in medicine, 86 - candidate degrees in medicine, 3 - Honorary Scientists of Ukraine, 9 - Honorary Doctors of Ukraine and 3 -Honorary Healthcare Workers of Ukraine. The leading scientists of the Institute are: Professors V.V. Bratus, M.K. Furkalo, O.S. Gavrish, M.G. Ilyash, G.V. Janovsky, V.M. Kovalenko, M.I. Lutay, L.S. Mhitaryan, O.M. Parhomenko, V.O. Shumakov, O.S. Sichov, I.K. Sledzevska, I.P. Smirnova, Yu.M. Sokolov, E.P. Stadnyuk, L.A. Svischenko, Yu.N. Syrenko, O.P. Viktorov, L.G. Voronkov,Doctorsof Medicine L.M. Babiy, A.P. Dorogoy, T.I.
