Scientific Director - Professor O.P. Viktorov

Department of Clinical Pharmacology
The department was founded in 1992.
The main research directions are:
- studies on clinical pharmacodynamics and phar¬macokinetics of the main antirheumatic, cardiovascular and other medications;
- investigation of the nature and mechanisms of development for adverse drug reactions, development of methods for their treatment and prevention, first of all in relation to drugs used for treatment of patients with cardiovascular diseases, and also drugs used in general medical practice in Ukraine.
In 1995 based on the scientific section of the Institute the Department of Pharmacovigilance of the Pharmacological Committee of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine was founded (Head of the Department -Professor O.P. Viktorov, M.D.). The scientific and expert activity of this center is aimed at establishment and development of the state control system of drug safety and efficacy both for the medicines applied for official registration (premarketing control), and for the medicines already widely used in medical practice (postmarketing surveillance).
Since 1997 at the department there was functioning the clinical subunit (Scientific Director in 1997-2002 - O.I. Mitchenko, M.D.). In recent years 300 scientific works were published, including 40 abroad, 11 monographs, textbooks and pharmaceutical directories; 7 inventions were patented and 5 certificates of authorship were received. 5 candidate's degrees in medicine were conferred to the scientists of the department. About 50 preclinical and clinical studies of
Ukrainian and foreign drugs were carried out, and also 5 studies in the framework of programmes of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and 2 studies in the framework of programme by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
In 2000 at the department there was opened the Laboratory of High Performance Liquid Chromatography (Scientific Director -T.A. Shevchenko, PhD in Medicine). The main task of the laboratory is performance of pharmacokinetic and bioequivalence studies of medicines.
In 2002 the department was reorganized into the Department of clinical pharmacology with the laboratory of functional diagnostics. Pharmacotherapy department was chaired by prof. M.G. Illyash, MD, whereas the laboratory of clinical pharmacokinetics was chaired by Senior R&D fellow T.L. Shevchenko, PhD (chemistry), the laboratory of functional diagnostics was headed by Senior Scientific fellow S. I. Deyak, Phd (med.)
Presently 1 doctorate and 2 PhD theses are in preparation at the Department.
