The department was founded in 1999.
The main directions of research are:
- the development and perfection of the modern principles of providing medical and social service and follow-up of patients with cardiovascular diseases;
- the development of methods for the assessment and analysis of the medical and social indicators of the health status of patients with cardiovascular diseases (morbidity, disability, mortality etc.);
At the same time the department studies the development of premature complications in patients with vascular diseases (cerebral thrombosis, myocardial infarction, sudden cardiac death), and their medical and social consequences.
Comparative scientific and practical analysis of population health status and the state of provision of cardiological service in Ukraine and its regions is carried out annually. The results of the analysis and respective recommendations are published as manuals, directories, reference books and are sent to the regions of Ukraine, distributed among participants to the medical practical and scientific conferences, symposia, congresses. These facilitate both the methodological management and provision of the feedback to cardiological institutions across oblasts to optimize their organization of due assistance.
The Laboratory of R&D Out-Patient Problems is working at the Department (Dr. A.P. Dorogoy is the head of the laboratory).

The department is permanently engaged in preparation of materials concerning health condition and its improvement for the Health Ministry of Ukraine and Academy of medical sciences of Ukraine, the Rada Committee on healthcare, oblast specialists, etc.
Modern computer software is employed to evaluate and analyze the data, informatics system, etc.
More than 100 scientific works were published, including 2 monographs, 10 methodological manuals. Two certificates of patents were obtained.
