Department of pathophysiology
The department was founded in 1968.
The main focus in R&D work by the department is drawn to the study of pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, importance and interrelations between its lipid and nonlipid components. Among priorities within the elaborated programs there is the role of systemic inflammation, oxidant stress, peroxide oxidation of lipids in modulating blood lipoproteins, increase in its atherogenic potential. Recently determination of interrelations between metabolism of lipids, lipoproteins and glucose, the impact of its disorders on atherogenesis became the mainstream of our research. The problem is studied within the framework of «Diabetes» National Program, participation to which provides for studying the development mechanisms for insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, determination of their significance as the factors in atherogenesis, advancement of ischemic heart disease and, in particular, acute types of its course. The main focus in this problem is drawn to the determination of inter-relation peculiarities between separate components of metabolic syndrome, and also the role of inflammation as a factor triggering lipid and carbohydrate metabolism impairments, manifestation of dyslipidemia and insulin resistance.
Research is both clinical and experimental in its nature. Clinical aspect of work includes the study of dependence between activity of systemic «ignition» process, intensity of oxidant stress, peculiarities in metabolism of lipids, lipoproteins and carbohydrates, change of endothelial function in patients suffering ischemic heart disease in quiet state as well as during conduction of acute lipid load. Research program also includes determination of sensitivity to insulin based on hypodermic insulin test, determination of presence and quantity of modified lipoproteins with the aid of mice macrophage culture. This fragment of work is carried out jointly with the clinical subdivisions of the institute -department of atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease, department of acute myocardium infarction and rehabilitative treatment.
In experimental conditions the possibility to simulate complete metabolic syndrome is determined by reproducing its major pathogenetic components: systemic inflammation — by way of intra¬venous infusion of lipopolysaccharide according to the elaborated original scheme, lipid and lipoprotein metabolic impairments - by chronic alimentary lipid loads, carbohydrates metabolic disorders - by chronic overloading with glucose.
During the last decade there were published 196 scientific works, including 58 abroad, as well as 2 monographs, 5 patents of invention obtained.
