Department of Myocardial Infarction and Rehabilitation
The department was organized in 1968 and became the first medical subdivision of such specialization in Ukraine.
The main focus of scientific research by the Department is determination of pathogenesis of acute coronary syndrome, the role of inflammation in destabilization of ischemic heart disease, methods of pharmacological correction of metabolic impairments in patients suffering myocardial infarction and unstable angina (jointly with the pathophysiological department of the Institute) as well as rehabilitation therapy.
The researches use the methods of exercise testing, echocardiography, Holter ECG-monitoring and blood pressure monitoring, scintigraphy of myocardium, radionuclide ventriculography, study biologically active systems taking into account the state of immune system, rheology and hemostasis, antioxidant system, etc.
In the Department for the fist time in Ukraine the problem of stage-by-stage rehabilitation of patients with acute impairment of coronary blood flow has been developed, primarily patients with myocardial infarction. Based on the department work and due to patient activation, duration of their temporal disablement and invalidity has significantly decreased. For scientific elaboration of myocardial infarction problems and implementation of these results into medical practice the employees of the Department were honoured the State Award of Ukraine in 1980.
During extended observation the positive impact of surgery bypass was proven positive for survival incidence of patients with postinfarction cardiosclerosis, their quality of life and reduction in their recurrent coronary conflicts.
Since the day of its foundation at the department there works one of the outstanding Ukrainian cardiologists, professor I.K. Sledhzevska, M.D., Honorary Scientist of Ukraine, here also doctors of medicine I.E. Malinovska and LM. Babiy, and 5 candidates of medicine are working.
During the last decade 350 scientific works were published, including 70 abroad, 10 monographs and 20 guidelines, 8 patents were obtained.
