Scientific Director - Professor O.S. Gavrish

Department of Pathomorphology
The department was founded in 1944.
The main directions of research are:
- morphology of myocardium in chronic ischemic heart disease and heart failure;
- morphogenesis of the initial stages of atherosclerotic impairment of the vessel wall;
- structural bases for destabilization in hemostasis thrombocytic link in case of cardiovascular pathology.
New functional and structural unit has been identified, and three-dimensional construction of blood microcirculation in myocardium and the basic characteristics of its transport and trophic supply have been studied. New adaptive reaction of cardiomyocytes has been established - labile associations of their mitochondria. All structural and functional chains of heart vascular system have been studied on vital clinical and experimental material. Morphological substrate of microcirculatory component of the coronary insufficiency has been determined. Morphofunctional characteristics underlying the insufficiency of cardiac lymphocirculation have been studied and its pathogenetic classification proposed. The concept of insufficiency syndrome and microcirculation system was formulated and substantiated. The phase character of the cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and the important pathogenetic role of dyscoordination of the humoral depending mechanisms of intracellular regeneration in their rebuilding and also in the development of cardiosclerosis was determined.
Examination of clinical and experimental material is conducted in normal and pathologic condition with the employment of traditional and modem hi-tech methods: histological, histochemical, electron microscopical, cytochemical, immunomorphological and morphometric analysis. Based on the obtained data, some fun¬damental conclusions have been drawn:
- Structural preconditions for electrical instability of myocardium while simulating chronic ischemic heart disease were determined;
- Morpho-functional equivalents were defined for endothelial dysfunction during modeling atherogenic dyslipoproteidemia and stress, as well as a concept was elaborated pointing to stress as a leading factor in triggering off atherogenesis;
The important factors of platelet destabilization during the development of ischemic heart disease, emotional and pain stress and rheumatic diseases have been described. The regional morphofunctional features of vascular endothelium structure have been revealed and new data on their role in the mosaic atherosclerotic damage to the vessels was discovered.
In the last 10 years 158 scientific works were published, 6 inventions patented, 3 textbooks on pathological anatomy were published.
15 doctor's and candidate's degrees in medicine were awarded to the scientists of the department.
