Scientific Director - Professor Yu.M. Sokolov, F.E.S.C.

Coronary and Roentgen-endovascular Surgery
The department was founded in 1991.
The main direction of research is design, implementation into practice and perfection of modern methods of endovascular treatment of patients with different forms of coronary disease.
The scientists have improved the methods of evaluation of morphological state of coronary vessels using the data of coronarography performed in patients with coronary disease. The department has pioneered in introduction in Ukraine of the methods of urgent coronarography, intra-coronary thrombolysis, primary balloon angioplasty, urgent coronary stenting in patients with acute myocardial infarction.
The concept of «as early as possible» re-canalization of coronary artery from the moment of its diagnosing in patients with acute myocardial infarction was elaborated in the Department. Creation of reperfusion centers for patients with myocardial infarction was substantiated. Methodology of primary coronary stenting has been developed and implemented in cases of multivascular and multiple coronary arteries' impairment in patients with chronic ischemic heart disease. Methods for the prophylaxis of coronary artery restenosis after balloon angioplasty and coronary stenting were worked out.
For the first time in Ukraine the method of intracoronary ultrasonic diagnostics of coronary artery impairment was introduced. Treatment methods for reperfusive complications in patients with acute myocardium infarction during invasive intervention were worked through.
Methodology of coronary stenting with medicament cover was developed and implemented. Method of intra-aortal balloon counter-pulsation during acute failure of the left ventricle was introduced.
The Department is actively introducing invasive treatment methods for patients with ischemic heart disease in other centers of the country, specialists and methodological recommendations are being spread out to other medical institutions in Ukraine, seminars on intervention cardiology are being conducted attended by representatives of the European Association of Cardiologists.
In total 350 scientific works, including 3 monographs, 3 guidelines both for doctors and patients were published.
