Scientific Director -Professor Yu.M. Syrenko

Department of Symptomatic Arterial Hypertensions
The department was founded in 1992.
The main directions of research are:
- study of the damage characteristics of target organs in patients with essential and symptomatic arterial hypertension caused by the anatomofunctional abnormalities of kidneys, development of new approaches to early diagnosis and investigation of opportunities of the organoprotective antihypertensive therapy;
- assessment of myocardial remodelling in patients with
arterial hypertension;
- study of relationship of the alterations in neurohumoral regulation of cardiovascular system and the damage to target organs;
- examination of the influence of prolonged antihypertensive therapy on carbohydrate metabolism;
- evaluation of organoprotective effect of the long-term antihypertensive treatment (no less than 12 months) using different classes of antihypertensive drugs;
- elaboration of new complex biochemical and instrumental methods for the early diagnosis of the damage to target organs in patients with arterial hypertension.
The Laboratory of Extracorporeal Methods of Treatment (hemosorption, plasmacytopheresis, ultrafiltration, ultraviolet and laser blood irradiation followed by the blood reinfusion) functions at the department. The doctors of the department took active part in elabo¬ration and implementation of the National Programme for Prevention and Treatment of Hypertension in Ukraine.
Two R&D projects are being developed at the department:
- investigation of the possibilities for antihypertensive therapy with organ-protective properties for prevention of arterial hypertension complications;
- development and implementation of recommendations as regards treatment optimization for arterial hypertension within unorganized population in Ukraine based on the quality of rendered service at in-patient, out-patient and polyclinic stages.
Since foundation of the department 1 doctor's and 9 candidate's degree in medicine have been given to its scientists; 425 scientific works have been published, including 231 abroad, 6 monographs and 6 guidelines.
