Department of Myocardial Diseases and Clinical Rheumatology
The department was founded in 1998 based on the Clinical Rheumatology Unit (founded in 1991).
The main directions of research are:
- the development and perfection of the methods of diagnosis and treatment of patients with the myocardial diseases, based on usage of modem methods of investi¬gation (e.g., ultrasonic, biochemical, immunological etc.);
- the substantiation and introduction of new methodological approaches to the study of the functional state of the heart and to the diagnosis of heart failure on base of ventricular myocardium models and the monitoring of their remodeling according to the hemodynamics disturbances;
- the study of the course of illness and development of the diagnosis of rheumatic disease with underlying autoimmune and immune complex mechanisms of its pathogenesis, and also the development and introduction of the new treatment techniques.
Modern ultrasonic and instrumental techniques are used for the disease diagnosis (echocardiography, loading tests, 24-hour blood pressure and ECG monitoring, radioisotopic, immunological and modern biochemical investigations, photon densitometry and others).
The department serves as a base of the Pharmacological Committee of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and carries out the approbation of new medicines for the patients with cardiovascular and rheumatic diseases. The department is also a base of the chair of therapy and rheumatology of the Kyiv Academy of Post-graduate Education and the Ukrainian Center of Rheumatology that coordinates scientific, practical, organizational, methodological activity of the rheumatologic service.
After the foundation of Clinical Rheumatology Unit (1991) more than 500 scientific works have been published, including 150 abroad, 4 textbooks, 20 guidelines, 35 monographs and manuals, 12 invention certificates. In the last decade 11 doctorate and 16 PhD medical theses had been prepared at the department, 2 doctors and 5 PhDs are working here. Post-graduate and clinical attending physician training in specialties “cardiology” and “rheumatology” were undertaken by 8 and 14 persons, respectively.
